If there’s one thing years of backpacking has taught me, it’s that packing is an art. I’ve crammed my bag full of things I thought I needed, only to realize halfway through a trip that I didn’t touch half of them. So, I’ve fine-tuned the perfect list—filled with items that have proven themselves over and over again. This isn’t just another packing guide; it’s a collection of the essentials that have saved me in a pinch and made my travels smoother. Ready to pack like a seasoned traveller? Let’s get started!

Southeast Asia’s jungles are beautiful but home to many pesky insects. A potent insect repellent will keep mosquitoes and other biting critters at bay, helping you avoid itchy bites and potential diseases. Apply liberally; nobody wants to be the buffet for local bugs!

11. Notebook

Jotting down memories, sketches, or even travel tips is a great way to reflect on your adventures. A simple notebook lets you capture your thoughts without draining your battery, making it a timeless way to document your journey.

12. Lightweight Raincoat

Sudden rain showers are a common occurrence in Southeast Asia, and a packable rain jacket will keep you dry and comfortable. Look for one that’s breathable so you won’t feel like you’re wearing a sauna while waiting out the downpour.

13. Foldable Toiletries Bag

A foldable waterproof toiletry bag is the unsung hero of backpacking. Not only does it keep all your essentials—shampoo, toothpaste, razors—organised, but its waterproof nature ensures that any accidental spills are contained, saving your clothes from a soapy disaster. 14. Comfortable Sandals

Birkenstock sandals are like the holy grail of comfortable travel footwear. Whether you’re strolling through vibrant city markets, wandering along sun-soaked beaches, or taking in temple sights, these sandals provide unmatched comfort and support. Their contoured footbed molds to your feet, offering great arch support, so you can kiss foot fatigue goodbye even after a day of exploring.

15. Linen Trousers/Skirt

Linen trousers and skirts are a backpacker’s best friend when it comes to staying cool, comfortable, and respectful while exploring Southeast Asia. The breathable, lightweight fabric makes them perfect for hot, humid days, keeping you cool while you’re on the move. When visiting temples, modesty is key, and linen trousers or a longer linen skirt offer the perfect balance of style and cultural respect. They provide the coverage you need to enter religious sites without feeling overheated, all while being easy to pack, wrinkle-resistant, and quick to dry after a wash.

16. Travel Wallet

A travel wallet is like your personal security guard for important documents and cash while you’re on the go. Designed to keep everything organized and safe, it has specific compartments for your passport, credit cards, cash (in multiple currencies if needed), and even your boarding passes. Unlike your regular wallet, a good travel wallet comes with RFID-blocking technology, protecting your cards from electronic theft—because no one wants a surprise bill while lounging on a beach in Bali.

17. Sunglasses and SPF

With all that glorious sunshine, protecting your skin and eyes is a must. A good pair of UV-blocking sunglasses and reef-safe sunscreen will help you avoid looking like a lobster after a day of exploring.

Be careful to choose ones that offer the appropriate level of protection for you, and in general, the higher the SPF the better. Broad spectrum sunscreens protect against both UVA and UVB rays, which is considered the gold standard. Supplies may be limited in some remoter places, so if you only have one choice and are not sure how effective it is, keep lathering it on - and keep an eye on how your skin is reacting.

Water resistant sunscreen maintains SPF for up to 40 minutes in water. Sunscreens with zinc oxide or titanium dioxide are goof choices because they reflect the sun’s rays instead of absorbing them. They, apparently, are also less likely to cause acne than chemical sunscreens.
