If you’re dreaming of white sandy beaches, crystal-clear waters, and a chilled-out island vibe, Koh Rong is the perfect escape when travelling Cambodia. This little gem off Cambodia’s coast is all about slowing down and soaking up the sun. Whether you’re here to snorkel, hike through jungles, or simply sway in a hammock with a drink in hand (a favourite activity of mine), Koh Rong has something for everyone. In this guide, I’ll share everything you need to know - from how to get there to the best beaches and hidden spots. Let’s start planning your island adventure!

Koh Rong vs Koh Rong Sanloem
Koh Rong and Koh Rong Sanloem each have their own vibe, making them both great options for backpackers, depending on what you’re after.
Koh Rong is the livelier choice, with affordable hostels, beach bars, and plenty of opportunities to meet other travellers. It’s ideal if you’re in the mood for adventure, nightlife, and activities like snorkeling or jungle trekking.
Koh Rong Sanloem, on the other hand, offers a more chilled-out, scenic escape. It’s perfect for winding down, enjoying pristine beaches, and soaking up a slower pace of life.
For backpackers, Koh Rong is great for socialising and activities, while Koh Rong Sanloem suits those who want abit more tranquility on a budget. If you can, split your time between the two for the best of both worlds! If I went back I would revisit Koh Rong. When I last went in 2023, businesses and tour companies were only just reopening after Covid-19 so the island was quiet with not much going on. However, work was in progress to develop the roads (from only dirt tracks) into tarmac roads and to build more facilities for tourists.
When To Visit Koh Rong Island
Dry Season (November to April)
This is the best time to visit Koh Rong. The days are warm and sunny, with calm seas perfect for swimming, snorkelling, and boat trips. It’s also peak tourist season, so expect a lively atmosphere, especially around Christmas and New Year. If you’re after clear skies and beach-perfect weather, this is your window.
Shoulder Seasons (October & May)
The transition months can be a great choice if you’re looking to avoid crowds. You might get a mix of sunshine and occasional rain, but prices are lower, and the island feels more relaxed. These months are ideal for budget travellers or those seeking a quieter vibe.
Rainy Season (June to September)
The monsoon season brings heavy rains and choppy seas, which can make getting to and from Koh Rong tricky. However, if you don’t mind the wet weather, you’ll find fewer tourists and green landscapes. Bare in mind that some accommodations may close during this time, so plan ahead.
My Recommendation
For the best experience, aim for the dry season between November and April. I visited in February and it was hot and sunny, perfect for swimming and lying on the beach!
How To Get To Koh Rong Island
Step 1: Get to Sihanoukville
Sihanoukville is the gateway to Koh Rong, so your first task is getting there.
By Plane:
Fly into Sihanoukville International Airport (KOS) from cities like Phnom Penh, Siem Reap, or international hubs in Southeast Asia. From the airport, take a taxi or tuk-tuk (around 30-45 minutes) to Sihanoukville’s ferry terminal.
By Bus:
Buses and minivans connect Sihanoukville with Phnom Penh, Kampot, and other nearby cities. Popular companies include Giant Ibis, Mekong Express.
Phnom Penh to Sihanoukville: 3 - 5 hours / £10 - £15
Kampot to Sihanoukville: 2 - 3 hours / £5 - £7
Book a bus journey with 12Go, Giant Ibis or BusBud.
By Train:
Cambodia’s Royal Railway offers a scenic (but slow) ride from Phnom Penh to Sihanoukville. The journey takes about 5 - 6 hours and tickets cost £6 - £8.

Step 2: Take a Ferry to Koh Rong
Once in Sihanoukville, head to one of the ferry terminals to catch a boat to Koh Rong. Ferries leave several times a day and take around 45 minutes to 1.5 hours, depending on the service and weather conditions. Ferries to Koh Rong leave from the Serendipity Pier or Sihanoukville International Ferry Terminal in Sihanoukville:
Serendipity Pier: This is the most popular pier for ferries to Koh Rong. It’s centrally located, close to the beach and most accommodations in Sihanoukville.
Sihanoukville International Ferry Terminal: A newer terminal, mainly used by companies like Speed Ferry Cambodia. It’s a little farther from the center of town but still accessible by tuk-tuk or taxi.
Make sure to double-check the terminal when you book your ferry, as different companies may depart from different piers.

Ferry Ticket Prices:

Where to Buy Tickets:
Tickets can be purchased online, at travel agencies in Sihanoukville, or directly at the ferry terminal.
I always use 12Go to purchase ferry tickets in cambodia.
Ferry Drop-Off Points on Koh Rong:
Koh Touch: This is the main tourist hub with the most accommodation options.
Long Set Beach, Sok San Beach, and other spots: Check which pier your accommodation is closest to.
Step 3: Getting to Your Accommodation
Once you arrive on Koh Rong, getting to your accommodation can vary depending on where you’re staying:
On Foot: Many places near Koh Touch or Long Set Beach are within walking distance.
Motorbike Taxis: For accommodations further away, motorbike taxis are available to take you directly to your destination. They’re a quick and affordable option, but make sure to agree on the price before hopping on.
Longtail Boat Transfers: For more remote areas, arrange a longtail boat with your accommodation or a local captain (prices vary based on distance).
No Grab: Keep in mind that Grab (Southeast Asia’s ride-hailing service) isn’t available on the island, so you’ll need to rely on local transport options like motorbike taxis or boats.
Travel Tip
From my experience doing this journey, the bus and ferry can often be delayed so patience is key. The ferry I took departed 40 minutes after its scheduled departure time!

Getting Around Koh Rong Island
Getting around Koh Rong is relatively simple, but the island’s rugged charm means transport options are a bit more rustic compared to urban destinations.
Walking
Walking is the easiest way to explore the main areas like Koh Touch and Long Set Beach, as many accommodations, restaurants, and bars are within walking distance of each other.
Motorbike Taxi
If you’re heading to more remote locations, motorbike taxis are a popular and affordable option. These can be found near the piers and are quick and convenient, but make sure to agree on the price beforehand, usually around £2-£5 for a short trip. I took a motorbike taxi from Koh Touch Pier to my accommodation on the other side of the island. The driver had my huge rucksack between his legs and me on the back of the bike and he did not provde a helmet!
Long-Tailed Boats
For even more secluded beaches, longtail boats are the way to go, often available from the main piers like Koh Touch and Saracen Bay. You can hire a private boat for around £8-£15, or share with others to reduce costs.
Cycling
If you prefer cycling, some guesthouses offer bicycles for rent, typically priced at £3-£5 per day, allowing you to explore at your own pace, though be prepared for bumpy roads.
Tuk Tuk
Tuk-tuks are another option, primarily found around Koh Touch, and are ideal for larger groups or if you want a more comfortable ride, usually costing £5-£10. For a truly relaxed experience, many resorts offer private boat transfers, especially if you’re staying at more remote eco-lodges.
Travel Tip
While Koh Rong doesn’t have ride-hailing services like Grab, the available transport options are efficient, and it’s a good idea to bring cash as ATMs on the island can be unreliable.

The Best Things To Do On Koh Rong Island
1. Relax on the Beaches
Koh Rong is home to some of the most beautiful beaches in Cambodia, and they’re perfect for chilling out after a day of exploration. The most popular beaches are Koh Touch, Long Set Beach, and Lazy Beach, but there are many hidden gems around the island. Koh Touch is where most backpackers tend to stay, offering a lively atmosphere with plenty of bars and restaurants. If you’re looking for something quieter, head to Long Set Beach or Sok San Beach - they’re less crowded and ideal for swimming, sunbathing, and taking in the breathtaking scenery. For those who want to completely get away, Lazy Beach on the western side of the island is serene and secluded, perfect for a peaceful retreat.
Alternatively, you should consider booking accommodation with a private beach. I stayed at Palm Beach Bungalow Resort on the east side of the island. It had a private beach with deckchairs and volleyball, a restaurant and bar and daily boat excursions. The manager was also really friendly and provided me a welcome drink when I arrived!
2. Snorkelling and Scuba Diving
Koh Rong’s crystal-clear waters and rich marine life make it a great destination for snorkelling and scuba diving. Many tour operators on the island offer snorkelling trips to nearby islands, like Koh Rong Sanloem and Koh Koun, where you can explore the vibrant coral reefs and spot colourful fish. For those with diving certification or looking to get certified, there are a few dive shops on the island offering courses and guided dives. The waters around Long Set Beach and Sok San Beach are known for being especially clear and teeming with marine life.
I would recommend diving with Koh Rong Dive Centre - it is one of the most popular and reputable dive shops on the island. They offer a range of PADI courses from Open Water to Divemaster, as well as fun dives for certified divers. The staff are highly professional, and the shop has a relaxed atmosphere, making it a great choice for both beginners and experienced divers.
3. Hike to the Koh Rong Viewpoint
For an amazing view of the island, take a hike to the Koh Rong Viewpoint, which offers panoramic views of the blue waters and green jungle. The hike is about 30-40 minutes from Koh Touch and can be a bit challenging in parts, but the reward is worth it. The viewpoint is a popular spot for sunrise and sunset, so consider going early or late for the best lighting and to avoid the midday heat. Make sure to wear sturdy shoes, as the trail can be rocky and slippery.
4. Experience the Nightlife in Koh Touch
Koh Touch is where the party’s at on Koh Rong, with its lively bars and beach parties that continue into the early hours. There’s a good mix of backpacker-friendly hostels and bars, where you can dance, and enjoy cheap drinks. Ocean Blue Bar, The Nest Beach Club, and Island Boys are some of the more popular spots. Keep an eye out for full moon parties, fire shows, and other events that often take place on the beach. While the nightlife is relatively low-key compared to other destinations, it’s perfect for those looking to socialize and enjoy a fun night out.
Koh Rong Pub Crawl
Every Tuesday and Friday there’s a Koh Rong Pub Crawl led by infamous island dweller Richie Rich. The pub crawl leaves from Sky Bar on Tuesdays and Monkey Island on Fridays at 8 p.m. Tickets cost around £5 and can be purchased online or at any of the stops. Participants get a free T-shirt, shots, and the chance to drunkenly traipse around Koh Rong getting hammered.
All Night Party
On Wednesdays and Saturdays there’s an all-night party on Police Beach with a soundtrack of techno, drum and bass, and deep house. Admission is around £2 in advance or £5.50 at the door, but the price tends to go up in the high season. This is also where the full moon parties are held.

5. Take a Boat Tour and Island-Hop
Exploring the surrounding islands is a must-do on Koh Rong. Many local tour operators offer boat tours around the area, taking you to nearby islands like Koh Rong Sanloem, Koh Koun, and Koh Ta Kiev. These tours often include activities like snorkelling, swimming, and relaxing on secluded beaches. You can also enjoy a traditional fishing trip or a sunset cruise. If you prefer more independence, rent a boat or kayak and explore the nearby islands on your own. Koh Rong Sanloem is a great destination for a day trip, with its peaceful beaches and clear waters, while Koh Koun is famous for its natural beauty and pristine environment.
6. Visit the Bioluminescent Plankton
For a really cool experience, make sure to see the bioluminescent plankton in the waters around Koh Rong. These glowing microorganisms light up the water at night, creating an ethereal blue glow. The best time to see them is during the dry season (November to April), and there are several tours that can take you out to witness this natural phenomenon. Some tours offer kayaking or swimming with the plankton, making it a unique and unforgettable experience for nature lovers and adventurers alike.
7. Go Kayaking or Paddleboarding
Koh Rong’s calm waters are great for kayaking or paddleboarding, and there are plenty of places where you can rent equipment for a few hours or a full day. Kayaking is also a great way to access some of the more secluded beaches and hidden coves that are harder to reach by foot. You can also rent a kayak or paddleboard from places like Long Set Beach or Koh Touch.
8. Sample Local Khmer Cuisine
No trip to Koh Rong is complete without trying some local Khmer food. The island has a mix of international and local eateries, with many beachfront restaurants serving freshly caught seafood. Be sure to try traditional dishes like Amok (a flavourful curry dish made with fish or chicken), Lok Lak (stir-fried beef), and Nom Banh Chok (a traditional noodle dish). You’ll also find plenty of fresh fruit shakes and snacks from street vendors around Koh Touch and other busy areas. It’s a great way to fuel up after a day of adventure.
9. Visit the Waterfalls
Koh Rong has a few hidden waterfalls that are worth the trek. The most accessible waterfall is near Long Set Beach (also known as 4K Beach), which can be reached by walking or taking a motorbike taxi. The waterfall is surrounded by jungle and is perfect for a swim or just relaxing by the water. There are also some less-visited waterfalls around the island that can be explored if you’re feeling adventurous. Some tours also include waterfall visits as part of a larger island-hopping package.
10. Adventure Adam Tours
Adventure Adam Tours is a well-known tour operator on Koh Rong, offering a variety of exciting activities for adventure seekers. Based in Koh Touch, Adventure Adam Tours specializes in island-hopping trips, snorkelling excursions, and jungle treks, allowing you to explore the best of Koh Rong and its surrounding islands. Their Full Moon Party Boat Tours are particularly popular, combining a day of island exploration with evening beach parties. They also offer unique experiences like trekking to hidden waterfalls, bioluminescent plankton tours, and kayaking trips to secluded beaches.

5 Essential Travel Tips for Visiting Koh Rong
1. Pack Enough Cash
While Koh Rong has ATMs in Koh Touch, they can sometimes run out of cash or charge high withdrawal fees. It’s best to bring enough Cambodian Riel or US Dollars to cover your stay, especially if you’re visiting quieter areas like Long Set Beach or Sok San Beach, where card payment options are very limited.
2. Stay Hydrated and Bring Reusable Water Bottles
The island’s hot and humid climate means staying hydrated is essential. Remember that tap water is not safe to drink in Southeast Asia, so make sure to bring a reusable bottle or buy bottled/sealed water from local shops. Most restaurants and accommodations offer water refills for reusable bottles, which is both budget-friendly and environmentally conscious.
3. Be Prepared for Limited WiFi
WiFi is available at most accommodations and cafes, but it can be slow or unreliable, especially in remote areas. If you need constant internet access, consider buying a local SIM or an eSIM with mobile data from providers like Smart or Cellcard before arriving on the island.
My trusty eSIM provider is Airalo.
4. Plan for Laundry Needs
If you’re staying on Koh Rong for an extended period, many guesthouses and hostels offer laundry services for a small fee. However, turnaround times can vary, so plan ahead and allow a day or two for your clothes to be cleaned. Alternatively, bring some travel-friendly detergent to handwash smaller items.
5. Pack Essentials for Island Life
Stock up on sunscream, mosquito repellent, and basic first-aid items before arriving, as these can be more expensive on the island. Also, bring a waterproof bag for your electronics and valuables, especially if you’re taking boat trips or kayaking. Don’t forget sturdy footwear for jungle hikes and flip-flops for the beach!
