Travel Tips for First Time Backpackers

Backpacking for the first time can be both exciting and overwhelming. The idea of exploring new places, meeting people from around the world, and experiencing different cultures is exhilarating, but the logistics can feel daunting. To help ease your journey, here are some essential tips from a backpacker to first-time backpackers.

Backpack

1. Pack Light

One of the biggest mistakes new backpackers make is overpacking. I 100% packed way too much stuff when I first set off on my travels. Remember, you’ll be carrying your backpack everywhere, so pack only the essentials. A good rule of thumb is to lay everything out before you pack and remove half of it. Stick to versatile clothing, travel-size toiletries, and lightweight gear. If you’re unsure of whether to pack something then you probably don’t need it.

2. Choose the Right Backpack

Your backpack is your lifeline, so invest in a good one. Look for a pack that is comfortable, lightweight, and has enough compartments for organisation. My backpack of choice is the Eagle Creek 56L bag because it opens like a suitcase! A 50-65L backpack is usually ideal for long-term travel.

Travel planning

3. Plan, But Stay Flexible

Having a rough itinerary is great, but leave room for spontaneity. Some of the best travel experiences come from unplanned adventures, whether it’s a last-minute detour or an invitation from fellow travellers to explore together. Book the basics like transport and accommodation for the next couple of days in advance, but leave the rest open!

4. Budget Wisely

Backpacking doesn’t have to break the bank, but expenses can add up quickly. Research budget-friendly destinations, take advantage of hostel kitchens, and use local transport to save money. Apps like XE Currency and Trail Wallet can help you keep track of your spending.

Hostel

5. Stay in Hostels

Hostels are the heart of backpacking culture. They’re affordable, social, and often have great amenities like kitchens, common areas, and organised activities. Look for highly-rated hostels on sites like Hostelworld to ensure a comfortable stay. Make sure to pack earplugs and an eye mask for better sleep if staying in dorms!

6. Embrace Local Culture

Be respectful of the local customs, traditions, and dress codes. And try to learn a few basic phrases in the local language - it goes a long way in making connections and showing respect to locals.

7. Travel Insurance is Non-Negotiable

Accidents happen, and you don’t want to be caught off guard in a foreign country. Get comprehensive travel insurance that covers medical emergencies, theft, and trip cancellations. A good provider for backpackers is SafteyWing.

8. Be Aware of Scams

Unfortunately, tourist scams are common in many destinations and I have been caught out many times. Research common scams in the places you’re visiting, stay vigilant, and trust your instincts. If something feels too good to be true, it probably is.

9. Stay Safe

Keep digital and physical copies of important documents, such as your passport, visa, and insurance details. Always let someone know your whereabouts, especially if you’re heading to remote areas. Use a money belt or hidden pouch for valuables.

10. Make the Most of It

Backpacking is a unique experience that pushes you out of your comfort zone. Be open to new friendships, try local foods, and embrace the unexpected. Every challenge will become a story, and every moment will shape your journey.

Final Thoughts

Your first backpacking trip will be a learning experience, and that’s part of the adventure. The more you travel, the more you’ll refine your style, preferences, and skills. So pack your bag and take the leap!
